Birmingham Mayor Bell on US Conference of Mayors

Over 250 mayors from across the country attended the 83rd annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in San Francisco.

The gathering was held June 19-22 and allowed mayors the opportunity to collaborate and share ideas on how to deal with issues within their cities. They also debated and adopted dozens of resolutions that will be submitted to the United States Congress.

Among the delegates was Birmingham Mayor William A. Bell. I asked Bell about his involvement with the conference, some of the policy suggestions he supported, and other issues in Birmingham.

Alabama lawmakers just finished their first legislative session under a new pay structure that gives them a salary equal to the median household income in the state

Voters approved the change in 2012 with the prediction that it would save the state money and would be a fairer way to set legislators’ pay.

However, Alabama Senate numbers show that, so far, the new system costs about the same. The legislator who sponsored the idea said it is premature to judge.

Best Sports Feature: Alabama Public Radio "Wheelchair Boxing"

This week, two unique sports teams from the University of Alabama are vying for a national championship. They’re the men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams, better known as the Rolling Tide. The university has a number of sports for disabled athletes and between games, these players have to stay in shape.  That’s leading to a partnership between wheelchair athletes and a man known in the world of boxing as “The Bronze Bomber.”
