Ala School System Denies Link to "Prayer Caravan"

An Alabama school superintendent denies that the system is sponsoring a "prayer caravan" event that's drawn complaints from an atheist group.

   Cullman County School Superintendent Billy Coleman is also a pastor, and he has helped promote the event.

   Coleman says his involvement in the religious event is causing confusion, but he denies that the school board itself is involved.

Group Asks Cullman Schools to Stop Prayer Caravan

Officials with Cullman County Schools say they are going ahead with a prayer caravan in August, despite protests from a Wisconsin-based group.

A group has sent a complaint to Cullman County Schools over a prayer caravan set for early August, claiming the district forcing religion on students.

The Cullman Times reported Friday ( ) the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to Superintendent Billy Coleman this week asking that he cancel the Aug. 10 event, which involves a short prayer at each school campus before the school year starts.
