Watts Named President At UAB

Dr. Ray L. Watts has been named UAB's 7th president.

The dean of UAB's medical school has been named president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.


Trustees selected Dr. Ray L. Watts for the position on Friday.


The Birmingham native has been dean of UAB's medical school since 2010.


Watts replaces Carol Garrison, who served as president for a decade before stepping down in August.


Watts graduated from UAB with an engineering degree in 1976. He earned his medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis.

UAB President Carol Garrison Stepping Down

Carol Garrison has stepped down as president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham has announced that she is stepping down after 10 years.

Carol Z. Garrison announced Thursday she is leaving but will continue to serve in her position until an interim president is named.

Garrison was named the sixth president of UAB in 2002. She came to UAB from the University of Louisville, where she was acting president. She was hired after the tumultuous departure of UAB's former president, W. Ann Reynolds.
