Jurors have found Republican Rep. Barry Moore of Enterprise not guilty of charges of perjury and giving false information.

Prosecutors had accused Republican Rep. Barry Moore of lying to a grand jury about comments he made to his 2014 primary opponent.

Acting Attorney General W. Van Davis said Moore told his 2014 primary opponent that the house speaker would withhold economic development funds unless he withdrew from the race. Moore later denied relaying the threat when he testified to grand jury.

Prosecutors in closing arguments on Wednesday described Rep. Barry Moore as a scheming liar, while defense lawyers said he was being unfairly accused.

Acting Attorney General W. Van Davis says Moore tried to bully his primary opponent to get out of the race by saying the House speaker would withhold economic development funds for a project in their district. Davis said Moore then lied about it before a grand jury.

Trial Set to Begin for Rep. Moore

The first trial resulting from a special grand jury investigation in Lee County is set to begin.

Republican Rep. Barry Moore of Enterprise goes on trial Monday in Opelika on charges of perjury and making false statements to law enforcement. Prosecutors have accused Moore of lying to the grand jury during its investigation of possible government corruption.

Defense attorney Bill Baxley describes the evidence as the weakest he's seen.

Attorneys expect to conclude the trial within one week.

A Lee County Circuit Court judge has moved the trial for an Alabama lawmaker facing perjury charges to October.

The Opelika-Auburn News reported Wednesday that Judge Jacob A. Walker rescheduled Republican Rep. Barry Moore's trial for the week of Oct. 27. The case was initially scheduled to begin next week. The judge moved the trial based on a request from Moore's defense attorney.

A defense lawyer is urging a judge to dismiss perjury charges against Republican state Rep. Barry Moore of Enterprise.

At a court hearing Tuesday in Opelika, attorney Bill Baxley said the indictment was vague and improperly constructed. Baxley also questioned if Acting Attorney General Van Davis was legally appointed after Attorney General Luther Strange stepped aside from the case.

Moore's lawyers are seeking to dismiss the charges and to subpoena records about Strange's recusal.

A state legislator from southeast Alabama is under arrest on felony perjury charges.

The attorney general's office says Republican Rep. Barry Moore of Enterprise is charged with two counts of perjury. He's also charged with two counts of making false statements.

Davis was arrested Thursday. A statement from the attorney general's office says the charges are linked to a continuing investigation of possible public corruption.
