Wintry Weather Expected Tonight

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Residents in parts of central and east Alabama may experience some winter weather tonight. National Weather Service forecasters say a strong storm system is bringing rain and thunderstorms into central Alabama. Later tonight, two weather systems will cause the rain to mix with sleet and snow. Meteorologists expect areas east of Interstate 65 and north of Interstate 20 to be the most affected. The best chance of snow accumulations will be in the higher elevations of northeast and east central Alabama. Meanwhile, the state continues to observe Severe Weather Awareness Week, but Alabama will not conduct a scheduled statewide tornado drill today because of the weather. Ken Graham of the National Weather Service says the statewide tornado drill has been rescheduled for Friday.
