Montgomery, AL – Montgomery County schools will lose about $2.5 million in property taxes every year because voters refused to renew a one-mill countywide tax and a three-point-five mill District Two tax in the rural part of the county. But County Board of Education chairman Tommie Miller says the school system cannot afford to lose that revenue. Miller says the money was used to support programs like the reading and math initiatives. The current 20-year, eight-mill tax expires next September. That tax generates about $16 million to help fund the operation of public schools.
