United Nations report on Alabama, Derrick Henry wins Maxwell Award

A committee from the United Nations may have something to say about human rights violations in Alabama today. The UN panel is looking into discrimination against women in our state. The representatives from The United Kingdom, Israel, Costa Rica and Poland visited Alabama’s black belt region as well as Oregon and Texas. The group spent nine days gathering first-hand information on how women are doing. Female workers in Lowndes County were asked about their pay and overall job conditions. The UN human rights report will be presented today during a press conference.

Alabama junior running back Derrick may become the second player in Crimson Tide history to win the Heisman Trophy tomorrow night. Henry is a finalist for College Football’s highest individual award along with Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey. SEC Nation analyst Marcus Spears says Henry should credit his success to Alabama’s offensive line…

“That’s the thing that really goes understated when we talk about how good these running backs are. But we could drive this bus through some of the holes Derrick Henry has had the opportunity to run through. That plays a big part of it but you know his speed, size, the ability to always see the cutback. He understands blocking schemes and that’s what he’s been able to do more than anything.”

Henry broke former SEC great Herschel Walker’s single season record for rushing yards with close to two thousand yards along with 23 touchdowns this season. The winner will be announced tomorrow night at seven on ESPN. ?

Things may be looking up for Henry following last night’s ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Atlanta. Henry beat his two Heisman Trophy competitors for the 2015 Maxwell Award. It’s the award for best college football player. Henry is only the second Alabama player to win the honor, and the first running back since. The Crimson Tide standout also received this year’s Doak Walker Award for top running back.

Holiday celebrations are getting underway and one tonight in Tuscaloosa may be hard to miss. The annual Santa-Con Pub Crawl usually sees people dressing up as various Christmas characters and making their way around local bars. Daniel Di Bona is one of the founders of the podcast network Super-Rich-Kids-Network. He says part of this year’s Santa Con will be a toy drive…

“We’re really accepting kind of everything, the list that we have from Toys for Miners, I mean there is everything from infants to teenage kids. We’re not asking anyone to break the bank, bring something, what we tell people is pick an age bring one or two toys you would have wanted at that age.”

Di Bona says Toys for Miners is a group gathering toys and goods for the children of mine workers who were recently laid off in Brookwood. The Santa Con Pub Crawl and toy drop off kicks off at Druid City Brewing this evening and continues tomorrow at the Downtown Pub in Tuscaloosa.
