Long-Serving Female Mayor Retiring

By Alabama Public Radio

Rainbow City, AL – The state's longest serving female mayor is retiring. Sue Glidewell has led Rainbow City for 24 years and has worked in city government for 37 years. Glidewell was also Etowah County's first female mayor. She worked for the city of Gadsden as well. Her sixth term will end in October, and she says she'll retire after that. Glidewell began working for Rainbow City in 1967 as city clerk under former Mayor W.R. Smith. He set a good example, also serving as mayor for more than 20 years.
