A University of Alabama program plans to give more than $5,000 worth of books to at least five schools in Alabama's Black Belt region in December.
The Tuscaloosa News reported that schools in 18 counties can apply for the "Book Bonanza" program conducted by the university's School of Library and Information Studies.
The program began in 2009. Each school typically gets between $1,000 and $1,500 in new fiction and non-fiction books. University officials will make the awards in December based on need.
The books come from publishers who send the books to professors at Alabama.
Eligible counties include: Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Choctaw, Crenshaw, Dallas, Greene, Hale, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Russell, Sumter and Wilcox.
