Birmingham Dragging Feet on Sloss Project

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Officials are delaying a $15 million visitor center and museum for Birmingham's Sloss Furnaces because the city has not chipped in its $5 million share. Groundbreaking on the project was set for May. But officials say that could now be delayed up to six months if they don't receive the city's commitment. Sloss Furnaces Foundation President Charles De Bardeleben says Birmingham has not responded to repeated requests for the money by a March 1 deadline. Birmingham Mayor Bernard Kincaid's spokesperson, Al Herbert, says that deadline was not set by the city.
