Alabama managed space mission to Pluto hits a snag, UBER in Mobile?

A seven hundred million dollar spacecraft gave NASA a scare during the most critical part of its mission to the planet Pluto. The New Horizons craft, managed here in Alabama, is just nine days from its closest pass to Pluto when NASA lost touch. The craft switched to its back up computer to regain contact. The catch is, New Horizons can’t gather science data in back mode. NASA hopes to get the craft working again tomorrow. The New Horizons probe is managed through the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville.

The Alabama Department of Revenue is hosting a free business workshop today in Tuscaloosa County. Residents can get information on various topics such as: state and local sales taxes, property taxes and business licensing requirements. Amanda Collier* is the Public Information Specialist at the Alabama Department of Revenue. She says anyone who is interested in tax information can benefit from the workshop.

“It’s really a good chance for new and current business owners to ask any questions that they might have related to their business. Laws are constantly changing, so it’s just a chance for business owners to be aware of all the changes and to make sure they are in compliance with the law.”

The workshop will be held at the main branch of the Tuscaloosa Public Library from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. No registration is required.

The ride sharing business UBER will try to succeed in Mobile after failing in Tuscaloosa and Auburn. The Mobile city council is scheduled to consider an ordinance amendment tomorrow that would allow the car for hire service to operate in town. The change to the city code would include so called vehicles for hire, like UBER and another ride service called LYFT. UBER failed in Tuscaloosa and Auburn after both college towns regulated the company out of business. One Tuscaloosa driver was also charged with possession of marijuana and having an expired license
