ADOC Prisoner Dies, Guard Stabbed in Separate Incidents

Alabama prisoner

One prisoner is dead and a correctional officer was stabbed in separate incidents in Alabama’s state prison system.

Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Bob Horton says an Alabama correctional officer is in stable condition after being stabbed during lunch yesterday. 36-year-old Wendell Tyrell Jones used a makeshift weapon to stab the guard from behind in the dining hall of Bibb County Correctional Facility.

Jones is currently serving a 20-year sentence for a 2011 domestic violence conviction out of Marengo County. The injured guard’s identity has not yet been released.

In an unrelated incident over the weekend, 33-year-old Joseph Michael Wood was found dead in a cell at St. Clair Correctional Facility. Wood was serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree robbery in Houston County in 2011.

Corrections officials say the cause of Wood’s death is currently unclear and will be determined by the county coroner. The prison has been placed on lockdown while the Alabama Department of Corrections investigates.
