U.S. ports from Maine to Texas shut down Tuesday when the union representing about 45,000 dockworkers went on strike for the first time since 1977. Those ports, like the one in Mobile, handle roughly half of the nations’ cargo from ships. A lengthy shutdown could raise prices on goods around the country and potentially cause shortages.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s destructive path, members of Alabama’s Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue Team are mobilizing. The crew left from Mobile on Friday, transporting water rescue assets, gear, supplies, tools and other necessary equipment where needed.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson and City Council Vice President Gina Gregory will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Lavretta Park at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, to celebrate Mobile’s newest public pickleball courts. To showcase the newest courts, the city will also host a Pickleball Clinic at Lavretta Park on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson is announcing that he will not seek re-election to a fourth term as Mayor of Mobile in the 2025 municipal elections. At the end of his third term, Mayor Stimpson will have served the city for 12 years, winning election in 2013 and re-election in 2017 and 2021.

Montgomery is receiving federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The money will support programs aimed at benefiting low- to moderate-income households as well as the elderly, the homeless and victims of abuse. Residents can participate in a public survey and attend a series of public meetings that begin on Sept. 23.

Registration is still open for the City of Mobile's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event set for Sept. 21. The free event allows residents to discard items that the city cannot accept during routine trash and garbage collection.

Registration continues as the City of Mobile will host the 101st Annual National Public Parks Tennis Championships, which are taking place Sept. 20-22. Port City leaders are billing the “Tennis on the Bay” tournament as a weekend full of fun activities and exciting competitions.

Governor Kay Ivey is emphasizing the importance of remembering Sept. 11, 2001. She will deliver remarks to students and staff at Halcyon Elementary School on Wednesday, Sept. 11. The cities of Tuscaloosa and Trussville are also holding memorial events.

The Mobile Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a fishing clinic for young Mobilians at Tricentennial Park on Saturday, Aug. 17. The “Kids Fishing Clinic” is for kids ages 5 through 15 and will teach the basics of fishing.
