Students and teachers in Florida will be able to speak freely about sexual orientation and gender identity in classrooms, provided it's not part of instruction, under a settlement reached Monday between Florida education officials and civil rights attorneys who had challenged a state law which critics dubbed "Don't Say Gay."

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson appointed Dr. Natalie Fox and Michael Tyner as the city’s first two LGBTQ+ Liaisons in 2021. However, in a press release published today, Stimpson said this decision ended up dividing the community and decided to dissolve these roles.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey defended her decision announced last week to remove the Secretary of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education.

Keeping educated and skilled workers from leaving Alabama appears to be an on-going concern. Efforts are underway at the State, regional, and local levels to attract and hold onto workers, including the Alabama Gulf coast. Surveys of those leaving Alabama for other parts of the U.S. cite a range of complaints as reasons for looking elsewhere to work and live. The Alabama Public Radio news team will examine problems and solutions to this issue in an on-going series of reports called “Should I stay, or should I go.” Recently, we talked about inclusion.
