Fishing is a popular activity in Alabama with thousands of people flocking to the state's lakes, rivers and streams each year. With more to be found in Alabama's waterways than catfish and bass, the latest Fish Consumption Advisory can help keep fishers safe.

The Mobile Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a fishing clinic for young Mobilians at Tricentennial Park on Saturday, Aug. 17. The “Kids Fishing Clinic” is for kids ages 5 through 15 and will teach the basics of fishing.

Memorial Day marks the start of the summer tourism season, but not just along the Alabama Gulf coast. But, the State’s visitor industry is bigger than that.

Alabama anglers get the chance to reel in one of the Gulf’s signature coastal fish species, as the season for red snapper opens again this month. Anglers fishing for red snapper on their own can begin May 24, and the season for charter boat fishing begins on July 1.

The public is invited to cast into summer with the 30th annual Fishing Rodeo set for May at the Auburn Parks and Recreation at the lake at Auburn Technology Park South. Anyone outside of Auburn can begin registering on Monday, April 15.

The Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resource is hosting a three-day workshop this October for women looking to sharpen their outdoor skills in a variety of activities, including canoeing, hiking, camping and shooting sports. Attendees will select four classes and receive direct training in these subjects for three hours.

Alabamians or visitors of the state with little or no fishing experience have the chance to learn a new skillset this Saturday at Gateway Park. Admission is free.
