Auburn has brushed off a late-season lull that had some questioning whether the Tigers deserved their top billing as the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Now, Auburn is in its first Sweet 16 since 2019 looking to top that Final Four run with its first national championship.

Miles Kelly made seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points, All-American Johni Broome added 14 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 1 seed Auburn beat 16th-seeded Alabama State 83-63 on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The No. 4 Auburn Tigers and Alabama State Hornets play in the NCAA Tournament first round. The teams play Thursday for the first time this season. Auburn is 16-4 against the SEC, and Alabama State is 15-6 against the SWAC.

No. 7 Alabama takes on the No. 1 Auburn Tigers after Mark Sears scored 30 points in the Crimson Tide's 99-94 loss to the Florida Gators. Saturday's game is the second meeting of the season between the two teams. The Tigers won the last matchup 94-85. Auburn is 15-2 against the SEC, and Alabama is 12-5 against conference opponents.

11th-seeded Florida is leading past 14th-seeded Auburn 60-50 after the first day of the SEC Tournament. The Gators' win ends the Tigers' season, and Florida now advances to a second-round matchup against sixth-seeded Alabama.

Johni Broome had 16 points and 13 rebounds and No. 1 Auburn overcame a rough offensive performance to beat Arkansas 67-60 on Wednesday night. After winning at Alabama on Saturday in a game between the top teams in the poll, Auburn avoided its second straight home loss.
