One of the last remaining birthing units in southern Alabama is closing. The small, nonprofit Grove Hill Memorial Hospital in Clarke County will discontinue its labor and delivery services on Friday, Aug. 16 at the end of the business day.

One of the last remaining birthing units in southern Alabama will close next month to qualify for federal funding that will save the hospital’s emergency services, but doctors warn the move may cost newborns and pregnant women essential access to obstetric care.

Alabama Arise Action members are urging state lawmakers to close the Medicaid coverage gap in Alabama, which they say can save lives, create jobs and boost workforce participation in the Yellowhammer State. Activists with the nonprofit organization lobbied for the measure last week in Montgomery.

Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham and Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster will eliminate prenatal and maternal care service on October 25. Monroe County Hospital will follow suit and close its obstetrics department in November. OB care focuses on labor and delivery and pregnant patients.

Alabama lawmakers on Thursday advanced legislation requiring hospitals and nursing homes to allow in-person visits, even during a pandemic. The Alabama Senate approved the bill on a 33-0 vote after several members shared stories of people being separated from loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Alabama Hospital Association says more than a dozen Alabama hospitals are at an immediate risk of closing. These facilities reportedly lost more than $700 million dollars in 2022. The Association said even with federal relief money, Alabama hospitals have lost $1.5 billion dollars since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
