A judge has dismissed a lawsuit over the effective date of a new Alabama law that expands the list of felonies that would cause a person to lose their voting rights.

Alabama says a new state law expanding the list of felonies that cause a person to lose their right to vote won't be enforced until after the November election and asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit over the effective date.

Gov. Kay Ivey’s special election date for House District 52, which covers parts of Jefferson County, is happening Tuesday, June 18. The seat was previously held by Rep. John Rogers, D-Birmingham, whose resignation was effective back in March.
