Alabama budgets

The Montgomery City Council has passed the FY 2025 General Fund and Debt Service Budget. It totals more than $300 million. The budget features a 15-percent pay raise for all Montgomery Police Department sworn officers and a five percent cost-of-living adjustment for all other city employees.

The construction of a new Alabama Statehouse, now underway in Montgomery, and related projects such as a parking deck and new green space has a new price tag. Lawmakers were updated this week.

Advocacy groups in Alabama are urging the public to contact local lawmakers over the continuation of the state sales tax on groceries. This is due to the law having a stipulation that Alabama’s education revenue must increase to offset losses for the deduction to be activated.

Governor Kay Ivey's office said the one-time tax rebates for Alabama taxpayers induced in her 2023 budget will be on the way beginning December 1. The Alabama Department of Revenue will issue the rebates starting on that date.

Alabama lawmakers gave final approval Thursday to a spending plan to use $1 billion in federal coronavirus funds largely on a mix of water and sewer infrastructure, broadband expansion and reimbursements to healthcare providers hit financially by the pandemic.

The Senate Finance and Taxation General Fund Committee approved the bill after making a change to allow local governments to use the funds on storm water projects in addition to drinking water and sewer projects. The bill now moves to the full Alabama Senate where it will be debated Thursday.
