The fine for removing Confederate statues could soon increase in Alabama.
The House Government Committee held a public hearing on Wednesday to discuss the bill by Rep. Mike Holmes that would fine cities $10,000 a day for violating the Memorial Preservation Act.
The current fine is a one-time payment of $25,000. Multiple cities have paid that amount after removing monuments.
Holmes said in the debate that the Civil War was not about slavery, despite the widely accepted view that it was the root cause of the conflict.
