ALBERTVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The Sons of Confederate Veterans have replaced a disputed Confederate battle flag at a northeast Alabama county courthouse with a replica of the first flag Alabama raised after seceding from the union.

Marshall County leaders say they weren’t consulted before the Confederate heritage group acted on Tuesday in Albertville.

Sons of Confederate Veterans 1st Lt. Commander Joe Smith tells WHNT-TV the group made the switch and will meet again Monday to discuss if or when they will put the Confederate flag back up.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans donated a Confederate war monument and flag in 1996.

A group called Say Their Names Alabama has been staging twice-monthly protests demanding the monument and flag be removed.
