'Girls State' Being Held in Tuscaloosa

American Legion Auxiliary Girls State

More than 350 young women are gathered in Tuscaloosa this week to learn more about government and leadership.

The American Legion Auxiliary's annual Girls State convention is being held at the University of Alabama through Friday.

Participants from around the state will learn about the way government works and hold mock elections.

They'll also hear from leaders including Air Force Lt. Col Shannon Juby and State Treasurer Young Boozer. On Thursday they'll visit the state capital of Montgomery.

Participants have completed their junior year in high school. Each school in the state can send at least one girl.
