An east Alabama state Senate candidate is accusing a district attorney of blatant electioneering.
State Senate candidate Tim Sprayberry of Heflin responded Wednesday to an announcement by District Attorney E. Paul Jones. Jones announced Friday that he had begun a preliminary investigation into Sprayberry's campaign finances, including whether he spent campaign funds on personal expenses. Sprayberry says he has kept meticulous records of contributions and expenditures, but the district attorney has never asked him for information about any of them.
Sprayberry says the lack of contact by the district attorney makes it clear he's conducting a political attack rather than an investigation.
Jones declined comment on Sprayberry's remarks.
Sprayberry is running in the Republican primary in Senate District 13 against incumbent Gerald Dial of Lineville. The primary is June 3.
