Voters in southwest Alabama are going to the polls for a special election to pick the Republican and Democratic nominees for the 1st Congressional District.
Nine Republicans and two Democrats are seeking their parties' nominations. Seeking the Republican nomination are former two-year college chancellor Bradley Byrne of Fairhope, Fairhope builder Daniel Dyas, state Rep. Chad Fincher of Semmes, former Republican National Committee deputy chief of staff Wells Griffith of Mobile, conservative columnist Quin Hillyer of Mobile, real estate agent Jessica James of Mobile, legal assistant Sharon Powe of Prichard, retiree David "Thunder" Thornton of Mobile, and Orange Beach businessman Dean Young.
Competing on the Democratic side are Burton Leflore and Lula Albert-Kaigler, both of Mobie.
The polls are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
