Minister Enters GOP Race For Alabama Lt. Governor

blog.al.com

A Jefferson County minister is running for lieutenant governor in the Republican primary against incumbent Kay Ivey.

Stan Cooke announced his candidacy Tuesday in Montgomery. Cooke is pastor of the Kimberly Church of God and is founder and president of a Christian mission organization that supports programs in Israel. He previously ran in the 6th Congressional District in 2010 against Republican Spencer Bachus.

Cooke says he's not a career politician and he hasn't made his living off the taxpayers. He says the state Senate needs a new lieutenant governor who will respect the will of the minority and protect the voice of the minority.

If elected, Cooke says one of his goals is repealing the Common Core education standards.

He faces Ivey in the Republican primary on June 3, 2014.
