State, city and county governments in Alabama collected fewer tax dollars per resident than any other state except Idaho in fiscal 2010.
The Birmingham News (bit.ly/VeL2DQ) reports that figures from the Census Bureau show Alabama at $2,779 per resident, while Idaho was $10 lower at $2,769. The national average was $4,112 per person.
Alabama's state, city and county governments collected nearly $13.3 billion in sales, income taxes, fuel taxes, property taxes and other levies in fiscal 2010. The figure would have been nearly $6.4 billion higher if Alabama was at the national average.
Alabama is often the lowest state in the annual ranking. It ranked lowest for 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009. It was second-lowest to South Carolina in 2008.
