A Birmingham-based nonprofit is calling all barbecue aficionados and grilling enthusiasts. Growing Kings is hosting its annual King of the Grill barbecue competition on Saturday, Aug. 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. in Avondale. The competition will be located right outside the organization’s office on 41st Street South.

An annual race in St. Clair County is expected to draw hundreds of participants from across the state, and registration is now open. The 15th annual Baby Steps Memorial 5K and Fun Run is Saturday, Sept. 9 at Homestead Hollow in Springville. Walkers and runners of all ages will strap on their tennis shoes and head to the starting line for the 5K at 8 a.m.

The Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resource is hosting a three-day workshop this October for women looking to sharpen their outdoor skills in a variety of activities, including canoeing, hiking, camping and shooting sports. Attendees will select four classes and receive direct training in these subjects for three hours.

A Maryland-based renewable energy company is bringing hundreds of new jobs to West Alabama. Enviva is the largest producer of sustainably sourced wood pellets in the world. The facility will be located in the Epes Industrial Park next to the Tombigbee River.
