ReporterGuy Busby is an Alabama native and lifelong Gulf Coast resident. He has been covering people, events and interesting occurrences on America’s South Coast for more than 20 years. His experiences include riding in hot-air balloons and watching a ship being sunk as a diving reef. His awards include a national Sigma Delta Chi award from the Society of Professional Journalists as part of the APR team on the series “Oil and Water,” on the anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Some of his other interests include writing, photography and history. He and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Silverhill.

European plane maker Airbus is teaming up with Lockheed Martin to compete to build the LMXT strategic tanker in Mobile and Marietta, Georgia. If the Pentagon picks Airbus-Lockheed for the job, it will mean major jobs and investments in Mobile. Both companies hope that the Air Force will pick the new tankers to replace its current aging fleet of refueling planes.

Say the word Manatees, and you might think of the State of Florida. The gentle sea cows are regular visits to the warm waters of the Sunshine State during the cold winter months. The costumed character Hugh Manatee was once the mascot of the Brevard Manatees minor league baseball team in Florida. But now, these sea creatures are showing up more and more in Alabama waters.

After a two-year wait, cruises are set to sail again from Mobile in March. A carnival cruise made a short visit to Mobile last year. Since then, the docks at the Mobile Cruise Terminal have been empty since then due to COVID-19. Now, Carnival Cruise lines plans to start sailing out of the Alabama’s port city.

One thing in store for 2022 are new legislative and Congressional districts across new voting district maps could affect voter maps in some of the State’s fastest growing areas.

The Associated Press published a list of notable Americans who died in 2021. Mobile native and baseball legend Hank Aaron was included. Hammerin’ Hank made his name with a bat. By contrast, Eugene Walter used a pen, a paint brush, and even a movie camera.

Recently on Alabama Public Radio, we reported on how Baldwin County is dealing with rampant population growth. In neighboring Mobile, they have the opposite problem. The population has declined steadily over the past 60 years.

Alabama’s Civil Rights Trail takes visitors to sites around the state where people struggled for equality and social justice. Names associated with the current trail included Rosa Parks and Doctor Martin Luther King, junior. But now, supporters say a new site should be included.

COVID-19 continues to take its toll across Alabama. Health care providers report the number of hospitalizations appears to be easing. If true, that’s the good news. The bad news along the Alabama Gulf coast is that it’s too late to save the National Shrimp Festival.
