Birmingham area property owners have until today to apply for federal help following rough weather last year. The Small Business Administration is providing loans for residents of Jefferson and Shelby Counties that were hit by severe storms last October. The deadline to apply to today. SBA Spokeswoman Terrell Perry says the loans are mainly to improve the structure of the property affected.

“The way that we come into communities and help business owners is through low interest disaster loans and those loans can go towards helping to repair the structure of the building or the place of business,” Perry said.

The Small Business Administration is providing the loans. Perry says businesses are not the only ones who can benefit from the loan opportunity.

“In addition to businesses, homeowners and renters are eligible to receive low interest loans from SBA for those people who live in Shelby and Jefferson County who are also affected by the flood,” said Perry.

The SBA benefits can cover property damage as well as temporary rental assistance and even some medical expenses. All loans have repayment terms up to thirty years.
