Mobile residents can clear out their old battery drawers this weekend. The city is hosting a hazardous waste drive Saturday, Jan. 29.
They’re collecting items like paint, aerosol cans, batteries and fire extinguishers. City residents can bring their own hazardous waste to the drive to prevent the items from being disposed of improperly.
Ryne Smith is an Energy and Environment Specialist for the City of Mobile. He said wrongly dumped hazardous waste can end up in local streams.
“Proper waste disposal can have a direct impact on our local environment. With fewer companies collecting items such as hazardous waste, this provides an opportunity for citizens to properly dispose of their waste,” said Smith. “This also helps reduce items that are illegally dumped, which could end up in our storm sewer system.”
Smith encouraged civilians to bring their household hazardous waste to the drive.
“We will accept aerosols, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, paint and fire extinguishers. We will not accept tires, explosives, weapons, electronics or pharmaceuticals,” said Smith.
Mobile’s hazardous waste drive is happening Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Seal Park.
