Alabama State University is partnering with the Montgomery Public School district to host a vaccine clinic today. It’s happening from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lockhart Gymnasium on ASU’s campus.

Children ages 5 to 11 can receive the Pfizer vaccine. Parents must provide I.D. and sign consent forms for their child before they can be given the shot.

Dr. Joyce Lloyd-Davis is the Senior Director of Health Services for ASU. She said it’s important for parents to do their own research on the vaccine before allowing their child to receive it.

“I certainly encourage parents to do their homework to go out to the CDC website,” said Lloyd-Davis. “Go to Pfizer's website, read the information, read about the vaccine, feel comfortable with it.”

She also said a few students vaccinated is still a positive outcome in her view.

“I am of the opinion if we only vaccinate a few we’re moving closer to obtaining herd immunity, which is our ultimate goal in this pandemic,” said Lloyd-Davis.

Lloyd-Davis also said children who attend the vaccine clinic during school hours will receive an excused absence from school. She said it’s important to wear a loose-sleeved shirt if getting vaccinated.
