Longtime Alabama sheriff convicted on theft, ethics charges

Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakley
Associated Press

Jurors convicted Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakley of two counts of theft on Monday, causing him to be removed from office.

The charges convict Blakley of taking money from a jail safe used to hold inmates' money and depositing it into his personal account.

Chief Deputy Attorney General Clay Crenshaw said the former sheriff will be removed from office immediately.

Blakley was found not guilty of eight additional charges.
