Montgomery police chief resigns; mayor says change needed

Montgomery's mayor says police chief Ernest Finley is out as the city's top officer.

Finley served as chief for six years after working in Atlanta for almost 30 years.

Mayor Steven Reed said it was time for a change even though the city's crime rate has fared better than those with similar populations. He also said the city did not sustain damage amid civil unrest last year following the murder of George Floyd, but that circumstances have changed since Finley first took the job in 2015.
