Sen. Richard Shelby's former chief of staff is running for his seat in the U.S. Senate next year.

On Thursday Katie Boyd Britt filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission as a Republican candidate for the 2022 U.S. Senate election. Rumors have circulated that she could replace Shelby, despite her not having yet announced her run.

Along with previously being Shelby's aide, Britt is also the former president of the Business Council of Alabama.

Shelby announced he would not run for a seventh term back in February.
