3 inmates killed in 1 week as feds sue Alabama over prisons

prison
A new system may help Jefferson County keep track of prisoners released on parole.

Three men have died after inmate-on-inmate assaults that took place earlier this month.

Ian Rettig, 23, was one of the victims and was one day from being released.

The prison system said that it is investigating, but no one has been charged yet. It also said violence will not be tolerated.

The deaths took place from May 4 through May at Fountain, Limestone and Bullock prisons.

Alabama prisons are currently facing a lawsuit that accuses them of excessive violence. The state argues that its prisons, while problematic, are not unconstitutional.
