Bibb County selected as site for new prison

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced Sept. 3 that negotiations are beginning for the construction of a new prison site in Bibb County.

Construction should begin early next year, Ivey announced in a news release.

“Bringing jobs to this area is important and we are pleased that Bibb County was selected as a site for one of the new facilities,” said Bibb County Administrator and Economic Development Director Derek Reeves.

The Alabama Department of Corrections estimates the project will create about 2,900 jobs in the Bibb County area.

Bibb County is one of three sites chosen for the proposed prison facilities; the other two are in Elmore County and Escambia County.

Construction plans feature new safety features, more for inmate activities and necessary technological advances.
