MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — State representatives and civil rights groups in Alabama have called on the state’s governor to expand voting options ahead of November’s general elections because of the health risk to voters.
The Montgomery Advertiser reports State Rep. Kirk Hatcher made the plea to Gov. Kay Ivey and the secretary of state in front of the Alabama State House on Thursday. He called for an early voting to start on Oct. 6, more polling locations, mail-in voting and no-excuse absentee voting.
The Alabama Secretary of State said he doesn’t have authority to execute Hatcher’s proposals. The governor's spokeswoman didn't comment on Hatcher's proposals, but said they will “closely monitor” developments.
