Birmingham to host festival for Southeastern dancers

Alabama Dance Council
Alabama Dance Council

The Alabama Dance Festival is putting on performances, classes, auditions and other events in Birmingham this week and next.

Dance groups and individuals from throughout the Southeast will meet for the festival beginning Friday and will continue through next Sunday.

Alabama Dance Council executive director Rosemary Johnson said her statewide non-profit organization puts on the event to foster learning among students and established professionals.

“Artists can showcase their work, it’s a place that they can continue their training, it’s a place where they can teach, and so it is, you know, the largest convening of dance in Alabama," she said.

Performances will include the Alabama Screendance Festival, New Works Concert and Alabama Dance Showcase next weekend. These will take place at the Dorothy Jemison Day Theatre at the Alabama School of Fine Arts.

Guest company Wideman Davis Dance will perform their experiential multimedia piece Migratuse Ataraxia at the Klein-Wallace House in Harpersville throughout the week.
