(OXFORD, AL)-- The Alabama Square and Round Dancing Association is getting people dancing.
It’s a growing hobby with 45 clubs across Alabama alone and this weekend their state organization is hosting the annual convention. Their event will feature line dances and clogging along with the square and round dances.
Most of their dances feature someone called a caller or curer. They tell dancers what move will come next.
“It’s just a fun, wholesome, family-type activity that anybody can enjoy,” said Thomas Wilkins, the president of the Alabama Square and Round Dancing Association. “Square dancing, we say, it's fellowship set to music or friendship set to music, and that’s pretty much what we do. It doesn’t take a whole lot of talent. If you know your right from your left, you can square dance.”
The convention kicks off Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. It runs until Aug. 24 at 10 p.m. in Oxford at the Civic Center.
