Mobile officers hold benefit for students in need

School supplies

Mobile area school kids may be getting their latest backpacks, glue sticks and pencils from police officers. The group Cops for Kids is holding its annual benefit event at Langan Municiple Park Saturday at 1 p.m. The organization works to help children in the Mobile area.

Founder Randall Wheeler said there’s a specific reason he was inspired to help kids in need.

“I was born in the projects and we didn’t have Christmas, we didn’t have anything. My mom worked all the time, but that was just to pay the bills," he said. "So now that I’m older, I’m coming out here trying to save kids and hopefully they don’t [have to] be in the same predicament that I was in. My thing is just come out here and get it done.”

Wheeler said the event is hosting over 15 vendors, including medical practitioners giving free screenings for kids. The back-to-school community event will have free food, space walks and even fire trucks for children to explore.
