COLUMBIANA, AL-- The Becoming an Outdoors Woman workshop is helping women gain valuable outdoor skills. Participants choose four classes from a diverse list that ranges from archery to Dutch oven cooking.
“The reason behind the event is to introduce women to outdoor skills in a non-threatening environment, in a hands-on workshop where they can feel comfortable learning,” workshop coordinator Hope Grier said. “A lot of women either do not get the opportunity to do this or they are taught by somebody such as a father or a boyfriend or a husband.”
It’s important for everyone to learn about Alabama’s natural resources. Some of the most valuable skills anyone should have are in navigation and the identification of poisonous plants. Grier believes an outdoors-woman is about more than just having a specific skill set.
“I think it’s any woman that takes the time to go outside and enjoy nature and what it has to offer,” Grier said. “You don’t have to be somebody who wants to hunt or shoot or fish. It’s just a woman that wants to go out and enjoys the resources, is knowledgeable about the resources.”
The event is sponsored by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Registration opens August 7 for first time participants and opens August 12 for returners. The workshop takes place October 4 through 6 near Columbiana.
