Red Cross experiences blood shortage after summer holidays

The American Red Cross needs blood this summer. Officials said after the Fourth of July holiday season there is a serious blood shortage.

This is not just an Alabama issue. Over 17,000 fewer blood donations were given over the holiday week.

"The Red Cross faces an emergency blood shortage after a tough Independence Day week for blood donations," said Ronnika McFall, a communications specialist for the American Red Cross. "About 450 fewer blood drives were held the week of the Fourth of July than during a typical week as individuals across the country celebrated the holidays and enjoyed summer activities."

Churches and business can host blood drives or friends can host virtual blood drives on the American Red Cross Donor app.

Huntsville Blood Donation center will be hosting blood drives every day for the rest of the month and into August.
