(TUSCALOOSA, AL)-- The oldent living University of Alabama football letterman turned 100 years old Monday. Dr. Don Salls played for the Crimson Tide under coach Frank Thomas after being recruited out of New York City in the 1930s.
Although he was homesick at first, he quickly decided that the South was his new home.
"I fell in love with the green grass and the papermill and all the good things that were here," Salls said. "I loved coming to Alabama. My life has been good; my wife has been good. The world has just opened up to me and I've enjoyed playing in that world."
Salls was part of Alabama's national championship winning team in 1941. He is the proud owner of the only championship ring for that year, as no rings were given at that time. His students at Jacksonville State gifted him a custom one he said he always has on his finger.
"They really open up their arms and make you feel good here at Alabama." he said.
