Mayor Jim Nabors of Alexander City, Alabama, dies at age 76

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (AP) — Officials say the mayor of a city in eastern Alabama has died.

WSFA-TV reports city officials Monday confirmed the death of Alexander City Mayor Jim Nabors. City Attorney Larkin Radney said the 76-year-old mayor died overnight at a hospital following emergency intestinal surgery.

About 14,500 people live in Alexander City, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Montgomery.

Nabors was elected mayor in 2016 after defeating incumbent Charles Shaw. Before entering public office, Nabors worked as chief financial officer for the apparel maker Russell Corp.

Radney said Nabors was instrumental in winning approval for the pending relocation of city hall to the former Russell sales office.

City Council President Tommy Spraggins will serve as interim mayor for the rest of Nabors' term. The next mayoral election is scheduled for 2020.
