ALDOT, Birmingham Seek Public Input on Bridge Project

Citywalk BHAM

The City of Birmingham and the Alabama Department of Transportation are collaborating to create a new public space underneath Interstate 59-20, and they’re looking for help.

According to Al.com, the city and ALDOT are hosting three two-hour public input sessions at the Birmingham CrossPlex today, from 10 to noon, noon to 2 and 5 to 7. Members of the public are invited to voice their opinions on the design and functionality of the proposed public space.

The project, to be called CityWalk BHAM, spans 10 city blocks, from 15th Street N to 25th Street N, underneath the new bridge on I-59-20. Some concept sketches include water features, a skate park and a carousel. However, officials say there are currently no concrete plans for the design of the new park.

The target date to finish construction of the new space is spring 2021, before Birmingham hosts the World Games.
