The annual Druid City Pride festival is taking place this weekend in Tuscaloosa.
This is the second year for the Pride event, with a lot more activities than last year’s. The theme is One Love, which festival organizers say could not come at a better time.
The events begin this evening at5:30 p.m. with a Happy Hour Kickoff Party at the Lookout rooftop bar at Hotel Indigo in downtown Tuscaloosa. Tomorrow, there will be a tailgate with PRIDE on the University of Alabama quad for the Alabama vs Texas A&M football game, with pride members from both schools in attendance.
Russell Howard is a member of the Druid City Pride Board. He says this year’s Pride weekend is about much more than just having a good time with members of the LGBT community.
“[It's about] coming together and showing that we are one organization with one love for all. That includes families of those victims of the tragedy of Orlando, and moving forward. Just showing the love that we have as a group, as a LGBT+ group, because love wins. That’s the significance of this year’s event.”
Howard says the weekend’s events will conclude Sunday afternoon with the Pride festival itself at Tuscaloosa's Government Plaza starting at 3 p.m.
