15 inmates treated after St. Clair riot

Overcrowding at Alabama's St. Clair Prison

15 inmates received medical treatment after a riot at St. Clair Correctional Facility Friday afternoon.

A correctional officer was assaulted during the prison's morning meal Friday. After the attack, the Alabama Department of Corrections' Correctional Emergency Response Team was sent to the prison. All inmates were ordered to return to their cells, but the occupants of one cell block refused.

Authorities say the inmates in that particular cell block became unruly, and the CERT team used what authorities deem a reasonable amount of force to disarm the prisoners, who had weapons such as knives, broken broom handles and locks attached to belts. The prison was then locked down without any further issue.

St. Clair has seen numerous problems in the past. The prison has been put on lockdown down twice in the past year, including an altercation Wednesday in which an inmate was stabbed.
