Join us for "An Evening with Mike Bunn" on November 21 at The Haunted Book Shop. Mike Bunn, the acclaimed historian, will delve into his latest work, "This Southern Metropolis: Life in Antebellum Mobile" during an in-conversation sure to engross Mobile history enthusiasts.

Bunn's book provides an exploration of Gulf Coast history, particularly within the city of Mobile, Alabama in the antebellum period. The city, known during its foundational era as a burgeoning economic powerhouse largely due to the cotton trade and the labor of enslaved people, holds a pivotal place in American history. On the cusp of the Civil War, Mobile was one of the most populous areas in the soon-to-be Confederacy and was the slave-trading center of the state until the 1850s.

"This Southern Metropolis: Life in Antebellum Mobile" draws on a unique resource — first-hand accounts from visitors. Bunn shines a light on the city's distinctive architecture, beautiful natural setting, vibrant entertainment options, and cultural diversity. Also explored is its intricate social environment, which included Alabama's largest white, free Black, foreign-born, and Creole communities.
