The president of the University of Alabama is acknowledging that campus sororities have used race to make decisions on new members, and she's ordering changes.
The university posted a video statement Tuesday in which President Judy Bonner says Alabama's Greek-letter organizations are segregated by race.
Bonner says "systemic and profound changes" are required.
She is ordering sororities to begin using a recruitment process in which new members can be added at any time. She's also expanding the maximum allowable size of the groups to 360 people to increase the chances for prospective members.
Bonner enacted the new policy Monday just days after the student newspaper, The Crimson White, detailed allegations that alumnae of some all-white sororities had blocked chapters from adding two black students as new members in August.
