Alabama's school superintendent is telling city and county school officials that policies prohibiting firearms on school property were not affected by the state's new gun law.
Superintendent Tommy Bice said in a letter this week that all school systems should continue to enforce existing policies banning firearms and other weapons from school property. He said students and employees who violate the policy are subject to disciplinary action. He said others who bring firearms on a campus should be asked to leave the property. If they don't, Bice says they may be arrested for criminal trespass.
Bice's letter also recommends that schools post signs at all school entrances saying "Firearms Prohibited."
Alabama's new gun law took effect Aug. 1.
